Science Study Guide
Here are the concepts for the science test:
-Electricity needs a complete pathway that includes conductors (metals) and correct contact points to create a circuit.
-Conductors allow electric current to flow and insulators prevent the flow of electric current.
-There are different sources of energy, including D-Cells, solar cells, food, and fuel.
-The energy of electric current can produce light, motion, heat, and sound.
-Energy is present when you observe light, sound, heat, and objects in motion.

Reading Update 9/5
We started reading "Treasure Island" in class today. We completed chapter 1 and the students have new vocabulary words, characters, and a summary in their Sea Logs.
This evening they need to read Chapter 2 and answer the following three questions in their Sea Logs:
1. What is unusual about the Black Dog's physical appearance?
2. How do the Captain and Black Dog feel about each other?
3. What causes the Captain's stroke?
Be sure to answer in complete sentences and restate the question.

Science
This week in Science:
Students will be finishing up Investigation 1 this week. They have learned a lot of information about circuits, complete pathways, current, conductors, insulators, and switches. On Friday they will take the first half of their first science assessment.
Please review your students copy book with them nightly so they are not cramming the evening before. The test will be part multiple choice and part essay (very similar to the Focus Questions they have answered in the copy books).

Classroom Birthdays
Parents: Please read for some healthy alternatives to bring to celebrate your child's birthday!
Popcorn or Popcorn Balls! • Popcorn can be a healthier alternative to cakes and cupcakes.
Fruit Skewers • With fresh fruit and wooden skewers, you can make a fun birthday treat for the kids to enjoy. Just slice pieces of melons, strawberries, apples, grapes, peaches, berries, or whatever fruit is in season. Slide several pieces of fruit onto wooden skewers (bamboo skewers work great) and give one fruit skewer to each student. These are a lot of fun to eat, as well as easy to clean up afterward.
Veggies and Dip • Serving veggies and dip can be a healthy snack for special occasions in class. Simply purchase a bag of sliced veggies, or prepare them ahead of time. Veggies that work great for dip are broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, bell peppers and tomatoes. You can choose a healthier dip like low-fat ranch or French onion dip. Place single servings of veggies and dip onto small plates and hand them out to the students.
Bagels with Cream Cheese • Serve bagels with cream cheese for a breakfast birthday treat. Purchase whole-grain bagels or mini bagels, as well as a low-fat or fat-free cream cheese spread. Bagel thins are another option because they are made with whole grains, and have few calories than bagels.
Non-Food Items: Stickers Tattoos Playdoh (small containers are $.50 each) Personalized Pencils Great websites for fun treats: www.orientaltrading.com

My Teaching Philosophy
I would like to share with you the philosophy in which I base my teaching and care of your children on.
"Teach my students as I want my own children taught to, respect my students as I want my own children respected, and love my students for the bright ideas and minds they have as I love my own children."

Website Recommendation
I wanted to share a great website for kids with you. Both of my boys have laptops and in order for us to keep them internet safe we have a search engine for kids loaded on them. Not only is it a search engine, but it is also loaded with kid links to You Tube (only kid safe videos), kids games, and music videos. The name of the site is kidzui and below is a link to access it.
